History

It was the part of the Chera Empire at ancient times. It has done a mojor role in trade relation with other countries. The real hero of the Thrissur was Saktan Thampuran known as Raja Raa Varma done so many remarkable things under his rule. Guruvayur Satyagrha happened in thrissur district considered as the main incident for Hindus equality The district was formed on 1July 1949

Geography

The area of the district covers 1137 sq miles. There are five taluks in thrissur district.They are Thalappally, Mukundapuram, Crangannore, Chowghat and richur.ThePonnani ,the Karuvannur the Chalakudy and the Periyar are the major rivers in the Thrissur district.Chowghat Mukundapuram taluk and Puthenthodu in Trichur taluk are linked by Canoli canal.

Art & Culture

The city itself knows as the cultural capital of Kerala. The town is built around the temple of Vadakkum Nathan. Pooram is one of the main Cultural events in thrissur which is known as the Pooragalude Nadu means city of Poorams (Pooram is a Hindu festival). Punnathur Kotta

Peechi Dam

It is around 20 Kilometer from the city. It serves as the irrigation project for in and around Thrissur district. The dam is spread around 3,200 acres with gardens and lakes. It is closed to peechi and vazhani wildlife Sanctuary.
